Old NOLA Cookery, located on Bourbon Street, is a small but colorful restaurant with great New Orleans fare. The waitstaff was friendly and the food came out fast, despite being very busy. Great food, good drinks, and friendly service made the overall experience excellent.
Redfish Vieux Carré:
The Redfish Vieux Carré, (pronounced View- Kah’ray) was a filet of redfish, topped with a pile of crabcake and shrimp, combined with a white wine lemon butter sauce. The dish was topped with fresh basil and tomatoes with a side of mustard greens. After eating this meal, Redfish is now my second favorite fish behind Hogfish (see Miami for details on my favorite fish). The crabcake, shrimp, and sauce combination was amazing, both by itself and with the Redfish. The mustard greens looked and tasted like chopped up seaweed; it was awful! I made myself eat it because it was probably really healthy. Combined with the rest of the dish the mustard greens were actually decent and did not take away from the taste of the other food. Ever since I was a kid, I have a tendency to eat foods separately, but have discovered as I have expanded my food experiences, that sometimes the combination of food changes the flavor to something entirely new and unlike the flavors of any of the parts of the combination. This was true for the Redfish Vieux Carré. Each part of the dish was good individually, but together it was excellent.
Chocolate Kahlua Mousse:
The Chocolate Kahlua Mousse is a rich, light, and fluffy cake served with whipped cream. There are toffee crunch pieces mixed in with the mousse, but it was not even noticeable while enjoying this delicious cake. Normally a cake this rich would be too much for one person to finish because it would be sickeningly sweet, but with the light fluffy texture finishing this cake was enjoyable. If you like chocolate even a little bit, I highly recommend this desert!
Bourbon Street Old Fashioned:
If you like the Old Fashioned cocktail, you have probably had a bartender ask if you want it sweet or sour. It took me awhile, and an explanation by a server, to discover that the difference is what tops off the drink. I also discovered that I personally like sweet much better than sour. In trying the Bourbon Street Old Fashioned I had another revelation, that they should give a third option, spicy. This new option is by far my favorite. The Bourbon Street Old Fashioned is a very good spicy version of the classic cocktail, very well made at the Old NOLA Cookery and delicious.
